BUYING GUIDE

First of all, I have to mention that despite the serious (or not so serious, depending on who you ask) controversies concerning tech products from China’s Huawei, no one in the know can doubt that Huawei smartphones are remarkably good and reasonably priced too. Huawei’s phones are a cut above most Chinese-made phones. Huawei has much more of a customer focus than their competition in China, Taiwan, and Korea. And now you’re about to see that the P40 series are probably some of the best phones you’ve seen so far.

Until 2018, Huawei phones were not that well-known outside of their native China. But after the storming rise of the company, thanks to its excellent P20 Pro with the premium design and amazingly brilliant triple cameras, suddenly Huawei was a smartphone maker to contend with on a global scale.

The P20's success led to the subsequent success of the P30, which, ahem, is undoubtedly the best Huawei phone in the market. So what to expect from the P40 series? You should expect nothing less than the bells and whistles of top smartphones currently available to buyers today. We’re speaking of bells such as triple-sensor cameras, enhanced privacy protection, enhanced waterproof capacity, faster internet with 5G, tough Screens, etc.

Now that we have a pretty good idea of what to look out for (that's if we don't already), it's time to unveil Huawei's trio of P40, P40 Pro, and P40 Pro Plus and see how many of the feature boxes each model ticks.

DIGGING DEEPER INTO THE HUAWEI P40 SERIES

The Huawei P40 expectedly has more bells and whistles befitting a high-end phone of its time than can be jammed into the table above. That's to say that this new release has even more features than are accounted for in our comparison table. The P40 comes in eye-catching silver frost, blush gold, deep-sea blue, ice white, and black colors.

As per the battery of the Huawei P40 model, the non-removable Li-Po 3800 mAh battery is supported with 22.5W fast charging. Oh, and yes, expect Infrared face recognition, fingerprint (under display, optical), an accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, and color spectrum. The video capacity of the front (selfie) camera almost matches that of the rear with 2160p@30/60fps, 1080p@30/60fps, while the rear video punches 2160p@30/60fps, 1080p@30/60fps, 720p@960fps; gyro-EIS. In other words, both photography and videography buffs are bound to be excited over Huawei’s P40 device.

While the large internal memory tops the completion of most high-end phones today, there’s also room for even more with an SD card slot with the option of up to up to 256GB (uses shared SIM slot) NM (Nano Memory). As you can expect, a device with this many features needs fitting processing power to boot. The Huawei P40 does not fail in this, not with an Octa-core (2x2.86 GHz Cortex-A76 & 2x2.36 GHz Cortex-A76 & 4x1.95 GHz Cortex-A55) CPU.

The 16M colors OLED capacitive touchscreen makes for a sweet, engaging, finger-tappy coupled with a screen resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels, and a 19.5:9 ratio (~422 PPI density). Seriously, even Apple and Windows fans should be blown away by the P40, and as a matter of fact, the two other Huawei P40 series.

The Huawei P40 Pro, as the ‘pro’ bit implies, sports a bit extra of what the P40 offers. Expect a premium build with a glass front-glass back-aluminum frame with an IP68 dust/water resistance (up to 1.5m for 30 minutes).

The display of the P40 Pro is an OLED capacitive touchscreen 16M colors. Together with the already huge internal memory is an expandable memory card slot- a Nano Memory (NM) of up to 256GB- sweet. And the chipset? HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G, and an Octa-core (2x2.86 GHz Cortex- A76 & 2x2.36 GHz Cortex- A76 & 4x1.95 GHz Cortex- A55) CPU.

Now let’s take an even closer look at the camera capabilities of the Huawei P40 Pro. The impressive 50/8/8/40MP camera is supported by a Leica Optics, LED flash, and panorama HDR. Also, the main camera video specifics is as follows; 2160p@30/60fps, 1080p@30/60fps, 720@7680fps, 1080p@960fps, HDR, gyro-EIS. The selfie camera is just as smooth as 2160p@30/60fps, 1080@30/60fps.

Sure, I won’t fail to mention that, yeah, there’s fast charging too. A 27W fast charging is sure to keep your Huawei P40 Pro always juiced up and ready to go. There are five colors of these beauties to choose from; blush gold, silver frost, deep-sea blue, ice white, and of course, black.

The P40Pro Plus comes in White Ceramic, Black Ceramic colors. The model also has Fast Charging capacity of 40W; fast wireless charging (40W), and Fast Reverse wireless charging (27W). It would be a disservice to you and to the Huawei P40 Pro + to leave out the infrared face recognition, fingerprint (under display, optical), accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, and color spectrum.

And yeah, the Huawei P40 Pro Plus main camera has much more going for it than can be crammed in the comparison table above.  There's the impressive Leica optics, LED flash, panorama, and HDR. And of course the video capacity; 2160p@30/60fps, 1080p@30/60fps, 720@7680fps, 1080p@960fps, HDR; gyro-EIS. Honestly, the features of the P40s are hard to beat even by the top ten smartphones of 2021.

Other honorable features mentions of the Huawei P40 Pro Plus include an expandable memory card slot- NM (Nano Memory), up to 256GB (uses shared SIM slot). A display resolution of 1200 x 2640 pixels (~441 PPI density) DCI-P3, HDR10, 90Hz. And YES- it’s 5G! This model runs on GSM / HSPA / LTE / 5G technology which is more than you can say for all the other latest high-end phones available today.

And of course, you want to know more about the build. I know you do.  The P40 Pro + sports a glass front and a ceramic back and frame that gives it a premium look and feel that it really is inside-out. Speaking of honorable mentions, I can't fail to mention the IP68 dust/water resistance of this phone (up to 1.5m for 30 mins). What more can you possibly want?

CONS

Fastest wireless charging

Fastest reverse wireless charging

Most impressive cameras

3D facial recognition
